How to Create a Private Character.AI Scene, Test It and Edit It

To create a private Character.AI Scene, open the documented Scene builder, choose a character mode, complete the setting and opening, select Private, then submit. Check your profile for the saved entry, play a harmless test, and reopen it to edit. Continue only if your account actually exposes these controls.

Before starting: audience, privacy and payment

For adults 18+ with their own eligible account for permitted storytelling. Back up an original brief offline and open a browser session.

Use fictional adults and places; include no personal records. Private is an audience setting, not proof of provider confidentiality, training exclusion or erasure. Check current privacy and content rules; keep secrets out regardless of visibility.

The October 2025 announcement cannot establish current entitlement. Pause on access or pricing differences. Before buying, inspect charge, renewal, cancellation and refund terms; payment is no verified fix for missing controls.

1. Open the Scene builder

The official quickstart documents Create > Scene and character.ai/scene/new. Expected result: the builder, or an access problem to resolve before entering content.

Check the official site and intended account. Use the Scene builder, not the Character editor. If blocked, record the platform and error; do not bypass eligibility checks.

2. Choose Any Character or Main Character

Any Character accommodates a selected Character; Main Character centers a specific one. Expected result: one deliberate mode choice.

The official Scenes announcement explains both modes. Use Any Character below. For Main Character, select your cast member and adapt the premise first. Do not assume mode changes preserve work.

3. Fill the setting, backstory and goal

Enter genre, time, location, tone, backstory and player goal. Expected result: a compact premise with a clear action, not a biography pasted into every field.

Original starting brief; adapt it within the limits displayed by your editor. Keep the lowercase placeholders {{char}} and {{user}} exactly as written. They represent the Character and player, not literal names.

  • Genre: gentle mystery. Time: present day. Location: fictional Lantern Museum. Tone: curious, calm.
  • Backstory: {{char}} and {{user}}, both adults, stand beside a display after closing. A brass compass points toward a sealed drawer. Its label contains a missing word. Keep this a nonviolent puzzle with no personal disclosures.
  • Player goal: {{user}} and {{char}} examine the compass and decide which clue to follow.

4. Separate the preview from the first message

Write the preview introduction and chat greeting. Expected result: clear premise, immediate opening move.

Suggested introduction: A silent museum, a compass pointing nowhere north, and one unfinished label. Examine the display with your selected Character and choose your first clue.

Suggested greeting: The compass needle turns toward a sealed drawer as {{char}} stands beside {{user}}. A label reads: Return the missing word before opening. The room is quiet. Which detail will you inspect first?

Leave the player's response unwritten; cut delaying background. Untested suggestions, not promised endings.

5. Finish presentation and select Private

Add a name, cover, chat colors and tags, then inspect visibility. Expected result: a complete entry with Private deliberately selected before submission.

Suggested name: The Compass in the Closed Museum. Use a permitted cover you own or have rights to use, not a personal photo. Check text contrast and choose relevant tags offered by the editor. Stop if a required media action presents an unexplained charge.

The quickstart distinguishes Public discovery, Unlisted link access and Private personal access. Do not choose Unlisted as a shortcut. Review the selected option again, then use the documented Create Scene control once when ready.

6. Check creation before testing

Look in Profile > Scenes, then open the entry. Expected result: an identifiable Scene you can inspect, not merely a submission click.

Compare the name and introduction. Use step 8's edit route to recheck visibility before playing. If absent, reopen the profile once and confirm the account. Avoid duplicate submissions; a click proves no persistence. Keep the offline draft.

7. Play a short, harmless test

Open the preview, select a Character for Any Character mode, and enter chat. Expected result: observations, not guaranteed consistency.

Suggested first message: I inspect the compass without opening the drawer. What can I observe? Then ask: What could we check next without forcing the lock? Note whether the reply preserves the museum setting, respects the puzzle boundary and leaves you a choice.

For Any Character, compare another permitted Character if available; distinguish tone from contradictions. Replies prove neither durable memory nor use of every field. Stop if uncomfortable; do not add real experiences.

8. Reopen and edit one issue

The quickstart documents adding /edit to your Scene URL. Expected result: the intended entry's editor, or an unresolved access issue.

Keep the actual Scene ID; do not type an example ID. Change one issue, such as replacing an ambiguous clue in the introduction. Use the editor's displayed submission control, then reopen the editor and preview to compare the revision and Private setting. No exact revision-button label is verified here.

Repeat the test in a fresh session if available. An old conversation cannot establish revision success. Treat unchanged text or uncertain submission as unresolved.

Common errors and when to stop

Check mode, placeholder spelling, selected account and visibility before expanding the story. Stop on missing controls, unexpected exposure, unexplained charges or repeated failures.

For a forced personality in Any Character mode, remove prescribed emotions and keep observable actions. For a flat opening, add one concrete choice. If placeholders remain literal, compare their spelling and report the symptom without guessing its cause.

For unresolved access or saving, contact official help with platform, time and redacted error. Never send credentials or transcripts. Alternative: write the scene offline; this creates no hosted entry but needs no submission or purchase.

Conclusion and evidence limits

Keep the Scene only after checking saved content, visibility and test results. Revise without multiplying uncertain copies.

Quickstart and blog checked via public web reader October 26, 2026, Asia/Shanghai; displayed dates: October 17 and 16, 2025. No fresh-origin-byte verification, signed-in action, entitlement, charge or successful save tested. Expected results are checkpoints.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need another Character for each new Character.AI Scene?

No. Scenes let you build situations without rebuilding a Character for each story. Choose the mode that fits the premise.

Why does an Any Character Scene change tone when I select another Character?

The selected Character contributes personality. Compare factual continuity separately from tone; different delivery alone is not evidence of a failed save.

Is an Unlisted Character.AI Scene restricted to my account?

No. The quickstart describes direct-link access. Select Private for personal access, without treating it as a provider-confidentiality guarantee.

Where can I find my saved Scene when it does not appear in search?

Check Profile > Scenes and the account first. Search absence alone proves neither successful creation nor deletion. Do not make it Public just to locate it.
